Nest Learning Thermostat. #Review

When a bird makes a nest, she looks for the perfect tree in a perfect place to raise her little bird babies.

When we had BB, we didn’t live in a great area. We knew from the moment that although our current house had been our home for 8 years, it was a place we wouldn’t want to raise our kids.

We looked to move and found a house close to family at a price we could afford and decided this was the place where we would raise our family. That was 4 years ago and slowly the new house became a home.
When we moved in, one thing we noticed that although the house had central heating it didn’t have a thermostat. We managed without it simply turning the heating on when it was cold and off when it got too hot. As you can imagine this hasn’t been ideal but it’s what we had to do and it was cheaper than the alternative of paying for someone to install a thermostat.

Recently, luck should have it, that the guys from Nest, got in touch and asked if we would be interested in trying out their Nest Learning Thermostat.
Here’s a little more information on the Nest itself;

This is a fantastic money-saving product, which results in annual savings of up to £353, guiding you towards energy-efficient temperatures when you’re not home through its Auto-Away feature and updating you on your energy-saving efforts through monthly Nest Home Reports. The transformative 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat learns users’ schedules, knows when they’re home, asleep or awake, and adjusts their heating accordingly. It is accessible from smart phone app which means you can increase your temperature or boost hot water from wherever you are in the world.

We’ve had the Nest Thermostat for about a month now and although we haven’t been able to really put it through it’s paces due to the hot weather we have had recently which meant we have had no heating on at all, it’s clear to see how useful this will be when it comes to winter.

With our current set-up we can set a timer to turn the heating on or off, so when we are trying to predict how cold it might get and whether or not we will need to out the heating on during the night, it’s a bit of a guessing game. This will no longer be the case thanks to Nest.
Admittedly if you already have a thermometer in your house, that would deal with this issue but with Nest we can simply set a desired temperature either on the thermometer itself or by using the smart phone app and the Nest does the rest for you.

One other great feature that having internet connectivity and the app gives you is the ability to control the temperature at home from anywhere. So when you have been out for the day and you’re on your way home, you can set the heating off so your home is lovely and warm when you walk through the door.

This video explains it a lot better than I can!

Like i said earlier, it’s been hard to appreciate the full abilities of the Nest Learning Thermostat as the weather has meant that no heating has been needed at all but the display has still been a handy reminder of just how warm it has been.

I can’t wait till winter to really give the Nest Learning Thermostat a really good test!
